Escort vehicle: traffic control for the biggest oversize loads

An escort vehicle is driven by a police officer or another person authorised to direct traffic under an Australian road law, as the Heavy Vehicle National Law defines it. Escorts go with the largest oversize loads, where traffic has to be stopped or moved aside, not just warned.

OpsChase pilot vehicle software flags moves that need an escort and reminds you of the notice period to book one.

Who provides escorts in each state

  • New South Wales, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory: police.
  • Queensland: Level 2 escort vehicle drivers accredited by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, or police.
  • Victoria: Safety and Compliance Officers of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR).
  • Tasmania: Transport Safety Services officers, or police.
  • Northern Territory: accredited oversize escort operators, or police.
  • Western Australia: traffic escort wardens.

When an escort is needed

The permit or notice sets it. In New South Wales, a load 6 metres wide or 45 metres long and above needs an escort vehicle under the 2025 requirements. In Western Australia, a traffic escort warden is needed above 5.5 metres wide or 40 metres long, unless the permit says otherwise.

Booking one

The NHVR reminds operators to allow for lead times when a police escort is needed. Its Victorian escort service needs at least 10 days’ notice and a permit, and is charged at $275 per hour per escort vehicle including goods and services tax (GST), with minimum charges. In New South Wales, a move with a police escort carries a measurement record signed by the operator, the person who measured and the driver.

How OpsChase helps

When a permit calls for police or an escort, OpsChase flags it on the job with a reminder of the notice period, so the booking is not left to the last minute. Read what to check on an oversize overmass permit. OpsChase is independent software and is not connected to the NHVR, any road authority or any police service.

On OpsChase: one queue for your team and contractors, follow-up when a job goes quiet, and photos or sign-off before it closes. Book a demo — one site or many.

Can a pilot act as an escort?
Only where the state allows it. In Queensland, a Level 2 escort vehicle driver can. In New South Wales, escorts are police.
How much notice does a Victorian escort need?
At least 10 days, booked by email with the NHVR, and you need the permit before you can book.
Does OpsChase book police escorts?
No. It flags the requirement and reminds you of the notice period. You book through the usual channel.
