Traffic escort warden: the Western Australian escort for high-risk loads

A traffic escort warden is the escort for high-risk oversize loads in Western Australia. Main Roads Western Australia says a warden must go with a vehicle more than 5.5 metres wide or 40 metres long, unless the permit or standard operating conditions say otherwise, and drivers must follow a warden’s directions.

OpsChase pilot vehicle software flags moves that need an escort so the booking is made in time.

What a warden does

Main Roads lists the warden’s duties:

  • Preparing a journey management plan
  • Requesting a Green Light Corridor through metropolitan traffic signals, if needed
  • Doing pre-movement safety and compliance checks against the permit
  • Escorting the oversize vehicle for the whole movement on public roads
  • Completing daily reports, vehicle logs and other paperwork for the move.

The vehicle

A traffic escort vehicle has red and blue flashing lights on the roof, “Traffic Escort” on both sides, and roof signage warning of the oversize vehicle.

Powers

Under Western Australia’s Road Traffic (Administration) Regulations 2014, a traffic escort warden is authorised by the Commissioner of Police and, for those functions, has some police powers, including directing a vehicle to stop and asking a pilot to produce their heavy vehicle pilot licence.

Wardens and pilots

Heavy vehicle pilots in Western Australia hold a Heavy Vehicle Pilot Licence. They warn traffic and direct it around the load. The warden handles the highest-risk moves. A big move can have both. See pilot vehicle and escort vehicle.

How OpsChase helps

OpsChase reads the permit, suggests the pilot and escort setup for you to confirm, and flags the escort on the job with a reminder of the notice period. Read pilot vehicle requirements by state. OpsChase is independent software and is not connected to Main Roads Western Australia or any police service.
